The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aim to ensure 100% of children pass through primary school. The PADEK Area Support Units (ASU) is committed to assisting Cambodia to reach this goal and coordinates with the Provincial Department of Education and other organisations in the coverage area involved in education. With support from the Director/Program Support Unit (PSU), the ASU has identified the areas of education where we can make a meaningful contribution (primary, non-formal or vocational education) and we will work diligently to develop our expertise in those areas, being careful to partner with others and avoid duplication of efforts. In the field of education, the ASU has focused on primary school aged children and adult illiteracy. The primary school enrolment rate was 94.28% in the ASU area compared to 92.22% for the entire Svay Rieng province (2007). Reasons for children not being enrolled in school include families that are very poor, children are required to work and earn income, low education of parents, lack of classrooms and distance to school. The literacy rate was 82.77% in the ASU. To continue to increase the literacy rate the ASU continues to support the CLTC to provide literacy classes and mobile libraries to their villages. Training materials and examinations for the literacy classes are provided by the Provincial and District Education Departments. Four new CLTCs will be formed and strengthened through training on pedagogy, psychology and networking skills.
